La Culebrera - a farm where plants and animals support each other
Half way from Minca and just 20 min down from our eco lodge is where our organic farm “La Culebrera” and the home to Plan B is located.
The farm, just like the hostel of Mundo Nuevo, is situated on the foothill of the Sierra Nevada. This makes the farm very inclined and, because of the history in this region, Mundo Nuevo has been blessed with numerous flat lands left by the indigenous. These flat lands served them then and us now, making cultivating a lot easier. Today, we still encounter the historical presence of the indigenous people in our gardens through findings of ancient staircases, broken pottery, charcoal and old stone-working tools. iIt has been proven that broken pottery and charcoal in the soil have a positive output on growing crops, which was apparently already known back then.
In our garden, we grow our vegetables throughout the year for Mundo Nuevo’s vegetarian restaurant. When visiting La Culebrera, you can encounter our permaculture gardens with its designed contours and swells, which help irrigate all the corners of our garden. You can encounter our fruit forest, our nursery, chickens, bees and fishes in numerous ponds. The exotic mountain climate is well represented in the abundant varieties of fruit, vegetables and grains in our gardens, all which we grow in harmony with nature, following the philosophie of permaculture.
Permaculture focuses on learning to understand the surrounding climate, landscape, people animals and plants, and how these interact. With all their qualities and imperfections, we are able to create a complementary and regenerative ecosystem. The farm contributes to Mundo Nuevo’s dream towards self-sufficiency.
Visiting La Culebrera is a perfect occasion to see what harmonious farming feels like and can be a source of inspiration for many of us. Come and visit us, we will be happy to give you a tour! For more information about the tours, click here.
